Research
The Proyecto Monitoreo de Aves (PMA) was founded in 2008 to
characterize and compare the avian communities present in six different
land uses throughout the CATIE campus and farm. These land uses include:
- Abandoned coffee plantation
- Shade coffee plantation
- Cacao
plantation
- Cane field
- Live fence in pasture
- Forest
In its first
two years the PMA has captured and banded over 2,600 individual birds
and 142 species. With the data collected PMA is increasing the current
knowledge on how the avian species utilize different agricultural land
uses that dominate the Volcan Central Talamanca Biological Corridor
(VCTBC) where we operate. In addition we feel the data can aid in
understanding how land use change and climate change is impacting
conservation of avian species. The PMA coordinates closely with
representatives and organizations within the VCTBC to promote the
conservation of key sites for the movement and conservation of avian
fauna. The PMA is a source of long-term data that is publicly available
on the biology of bird communities. We collaborate with local, regional
and international organizations on the science and conservation of
birds. If you are interested in seeing our data please feel free to
contact us.
