The journal, Agroforestería en las Américas, is an international publication covering the progress and applications made in the field of agroforestry in the American continents. Its purpose is to promote natural resource use that is more conscious of ecological possibilities and social needs in the region's countries. It also hopes to favor the exchange of knowledge and a greater cooperation between institutions and groups involved in agroforestry activities.

This new publication is designed to satisfy the information needs of researchers, extensionists, technicians, educators and decision-makers in the growing field of agroforestry as both a science and as a technology.

The journal is directed by Dr. Donald L. Kass, with the support of an international committee comprised of Dr. John Beer (Head, Watershed and Agroforestry Systems Area, CATIE, C.R.), Dr. Gerardo Budowski (Universidad para la Paz, C.R.), Dr. John Weber (ICRAF/Peru), Dr. Jean C.L. Dubois, REBRAF (Brazil) and Ms. Xinia Aguilar (Editor of Revista Forestal Centroamericana, C.R.).

Work is supervised by an Operational Editorial Committee comprised of technicians in the area and chaired by Dr. Kass. The committee members are: Dr. Eduardo Somarriba, Ms. Rossana Lok and Mr. Arturo Vargas.

Agroforestería en las Américas is edited by the Agroforestry Systems Area Coordinators at the Tropical Agriculture Research and Higher Learning Center, (CATIE), a pioneer institution in this field. The journal is funded by the Danish Government through Danida and receives support from the International Center for Agroforestry Research (ICRAF/Kenya) through the National Agroforestry Center (U.S.A.).

This new journal is published quarterly in Spanish, and has an edition of 2000 copies. During the first few years of publication, Agroforestería en las Américas was distributed free to more than 3,500 readers in the Americas and other countries. With the publication of the new issue, the journal will begin being sold in order to become self-sustaining.
